Four-wheel-drive (4WD) became a factory option by 1959, for sure a Ford breakthrough. The cab-over F-series was discontinued in favor of the C-Series, used as fire and heavy-duty delivery trucks, which stayed in production until 1990. A modernized style saw the front fender's integrated into the vehicle's body, along with the hood into the bodywork, creating a clamshell look. The third gen ran from 1957-1960 only, but there were a few prominent things that occurred here. Radio options even became available, and by generation's end in 1956, so were seat belts. The complete redesign brought new engines, an updated chassis, and a more roomy interior and exterior. Also, the OHV V-8 replaces the flathead V-8 in 1954. In addition, armrests, sun visors, dome lights, and automatic transmissions become available. Here the F-1 becomes the F-100, the F-2 and F-3 turn into the F-250, and the F-4 is now the F-350. By the second generation, beginning in 1953, we begin to see the F-Series taking a more recognizable designation.
